What is a School Psychologist?

School psychologists help children and youth succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. We collaborate with educators, parents, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments for all students that strengthen connections between home, school, and community.
We work to find the best solution for each student and situation, and use different strategies to address student needs and to improve school and district-wide support systems.

We work with students individually and in groups. We develop programs to train teachers and parents about effective teaching and learning strategies, techniques to manage behavior at home and in the classroom, working with students with disabilities or with special talents, and preventing and managing crises.

I work with students of all ages to:
Provide counseling and guidance for those struggling with social, emotional, and behavioral difficulties
Determine barriers to learning and choose the best instructional strategies to increase achievement
Reinforce communication and social skills, problem solving, anger management, and self-regulation

I work with families to:
Identify and address student learning and/or behavior problems that interfere with school success and student growth
Evaluate eligibility for special education services (within a multidisciplinary team)
Support students' social, emotional, and behavioral health
Enhance homeñschool collaboration
Make referrals and help coordinate community support services

I work with teachers to:
Identify academic barriers to learning
Design and implement student progress monitoring systems, as well as academic and behavioral interventions
Support effective individualized instruction
Create positive classroom environments

As part of a building team, I work with others to:
Collect and analyze data regarding school improvement and student outcomes
Implement school-wide programs that help maintain positive school climates
Promote school policies and practices that ensure the safety of all students by reducing school violence and bullying
Respond to crises by providing leadership, direct services, and coordination with community services

As part of the community, I work to:
Coordinate the delivery of services to students and their families in and outside of school
