School Hours School hours are: 9:05 - 3:35. Kids should arrive between 8:50 and 9:00. Children arriving after the 9:05 bell rings will be marked tardy.

Morning Drop Off and Afternoon Pick up Children are allowed on the playground before school beginning at 8:50 a.m., NOT before, because Dewey supervision begins at 8:50. Children in grades K-2 are assigned to the front playground. Children in grades 3-5 should walk AROUND the school to the back playground. Children should not cut through the building. At 9:00 a.m., the "line up" bell sounds, and children line up with their classes in the area designated by the teacher. We are working very hard to increase the number of students who arrive on time and eliminate tardiness, so that school may begin on time. Please have your child here no later than 8:55
AM.
For the first couple of days of school, all of the teachers will be out on the playgrounds with signs announcing their room numbers. The teachers will help the children line up. As has always been done at Dewey please don't come into the hallway or classroom with your children in the morning during this period. This will make separation even more difficult. The teachers do a wonderful job helping kids adjust, so please do not worry.
If we are having inclement weather (rain or temperature below 20 degrees), children in grades K-2 should go to the gym, and children in grades 3-5 should go to the auditorium at 8:50 a.m. Dismissal is at 3:35p.m. Please arrange a meeting place outside at the end of the day. It is very disruptive if parents enter the classroom or the hallways or peer into the windows at the end
of the day. It will help keep the halls dear so the children can get their belongings out of their lockers.
Wesley Avenue is a one-way street in the morning between 8:30 and 9:15 AM, and again between 3:00 and 3:45 PM. The City of Evanston changes the signs for us to assist in managing traffic flow on Wesley. During both time periods the street is one-way NORTHBOUND.
Parking is limited around the school and the "No Parking" signs are enforced by the city. Parents are frequently ticketed if they are parked illegally. There is no parking lot for the school. The principal cannot control the ticketing.
Information about Important School Matters and PTA Programs
At the end of the first day of school you will receive two large envelopes from your child. The first contains important information about school matters including the District Handbook and Code of Conduct. Please read them carefully, sign the acknowledgement form in the back of these booklets, and return them with your child. There are also a number of other forms that must be signed and returned. Please do this by the end of the first week of school, so that teachers do not have to continue to ask children for these important papers. ·
The second envelope contains information about the PTA and its activities. Please review the materials for two key things: (1) after school clubs and activities that your child may be interested in and (2) opportunities for you to volunteer.
Parents are involved in Dewey in lots of different ways. We need each and every one of you to consider how you could join us in ensuring that our school is the best it can be. We urge you to attend the PTA meetings (usually held the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30 in the school library). Childcare is available. Get to know some wonderful people and find a way to join us that best fits your interests and your schedules.
Each Friday your child will bring home a "Friday Folder." We send home flyers with information and some of your child's work for the week. Please review the materials carefully.
We are trying to "go green" at Dewey, so much of our information will be posted on our web site (http://dewey.district65.net) including the Friday Folder. Additionally, we will be trying to send school information to parents via e-mail this year (instead of always copying notes to go in backpacks). Please make sure that the office has your current and correct e-mail address.
LUNCHTIME Food and Milk Each child may purchase a hot lunch with milk for $2.50 per day. The food is ordered each morning from Evanston High School. Each teacher takes orders first thing in the morning. Children may bring lunches from home as well. Milk (white or chocolate) can be purchased each day for $.60. Students can pay for lunch or milk on a daily basis or up to a week at a time. Please send exact change for all lunch purchases or send a check. Making change is extremely difficult for the teachers
as well as very time consuming and takes away from teaching and learning time.
If your child is going to be more than a few minutes late and wants to buy lunch or milk, please call the office (not the Attendance Line where you call in absences) so that milk and lunch can be ordered. We order the specific amount of lunches daily at 9:20 - so our knowing your child needs one is imperative.
Lunch Schedule Your child has 20 minutes for lunch and 20 minutes to play outside. Your child stays with his or her grade level throughout the entire lunch period with 2 lunchtime supervisors. This new program is designed to ensure that your child has enough time to eat and to ensure that the recess is safe and fun.
Your teacher will tell your child when he or she will go to lunch. Some children will play first, others will eat first.
On rainy days or cold days children will stay inside during recess. However, children do play outside in cold weather unless the temperature goes below 20 degrees. Please make sure that your child has the appropriate attire for winter weather-hat, mittens or gloves, boots and snow pants or a change of dry clothes

How You Can Best Work With Us to Solve Any Problems If you have concerns involving your child's classroom activities, please communicate with the teacher first. If the concern is not resolved, feel free to contact Mr. Khelghati. Any problems involving the school bus, lunch issues, and other day-to-day matters can be addressed to Pam Shaffer, our school administrative assistant. She is in the office every day; she can help you decide the best avenue to address your concern and direct you to the appropriate resource.
Health Issues Please make sure that you provide us with two emergency telephone numbers other than your numbers. We will attempt to call you first if your child is sick at school or sustains an injury. If your work or home telephone numbers change, or if your emergency contact changes, please let us know as soon as possible. Our health clerk is Mrs. Baraona.
Lockers Each child has a locker at school to store coats, extra shoes, etc. Most children share a locker with another student. Please don't send anything to school that is valuable to you or your child. The lockers are not locked and the school cannot be responsible for these items. If your child wants to bring a ball to play with at lunch, make sure that it is labeled with his/her name in permanent marker.
Attendance If your child is going to be absent or significantly late, call the Safe Phone/Attendance Line number (847-859-8753). All of the important numbers are listed in the Dewey School Calendar. It will I be sent home on the first day in the PTA envelope.
If your child is tardy, he or·she goes first to the office and receives a late pass. Then your child can proceed to the classroom. Please make every effort to have your child at school on time. The first few minutes of the day are extremely important in setting a tone to the entire day.
Cell Phones Cell phones are permissible so that children can contact parents/guardians after school hours. However phone use is NOT ALLOWED FOR ANY REASON DURING SCHOOL HOURS AND PHONES MUST REMAIN OFF FROM 9:05-3:35. Additionally DEWEY SCHOOL STAFF WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR STOLEN PHONES. Phones ringing or being used FOR ANY REASON during the school
day will be taken by school employees.
Visitors If you wish to visit the school, please come to the office to sign in and get a visitor badge. You will then be buzzed through the office doors into the school area. Please sign out when you leave. It is very important to do so. ln the event of an emergency, we need to know who is in the building.
Although you are certainly welcome at school, please do not visit your child's class without arranging it in advance. If you are dropping something off or need to get a message to your child, please come to the office. We will make that delivery during an appropriate time or call your child down to the office to see you. We are trying very hard to eliminate classroom disruptions and ensure the highest level of student learning and engagement during school hours. We appreciate your help with this.
Changes of Plans Occasionally, you may have to call the office to leave a message for your child about a change of plans or an emergency. This is fine, and we are happy to relay a message. However, we cannot allow children to call home to arrange play dates nor can we be responsible for communicating play dates to children during the day. Please make sure you make these kinds of arrangements in advance and make sure that your child knows exactly where they will be going after school, with whom, and how they will get there.
Curriculum Night and Other Activities Curriculum Night, for parents only, will be held on September 7. It is a time for you to meet with your child's teacher and to learn about your child's curriculum and our standards. More information will be coming home about this event next week.
Throughout the year, there will be lots of opportunities for you and your children to socialize with other Dewey families. Flyers will be sent home to announce these events and the Dewey calendar contains all of them. Also, the PTA publishes a monthly newsletter called "Tiger Talk." It contains additional important information about upcoming events and activities.
After School Child Care District 65 provides childcare for students before and after school. This program has limited enrollment. Contact the District 65 Childcare Office at 859-8300, if you need additional information.

Si hubiera un clima inclemente (lluvia o temperatura de 20 grados bajo cero), niños de K-2 deberán ir directo al gimnasio y los estudiantes de 3-5 deberán ir al auditorio a las 8:50 a.m. La salida es a las 3:35p.m. Por favor pónganse de acuerdo para encontrarse con su hijo afuera al final del día. Es muy perturbador si los padres entran al salón de clases, a los pasillos o si se asoman por las ventanas al terminar el día. Por favor ayúdenos a mantener los pasillos desocupados para que los niños puedan moverse a sus casilleros a recoger sus pertenencias.
La avenida Wesley es de un solo sentido por la mañana entre las 8:30 AM a las 9:15 AM y por la tarde entre las 3:00 PM y 3:45 PM. Información sobre asuntos escolares importantes y el programa del PTA Al final del primer día de clases usted recibirá dos sobres grandes que llevará su hijo a casa. El primero contiene información sobre asuntos escolares incluyendo el manual del Distrito y el Código de Conducta. Por favor léalos cuidadosamente, firme atrás para confirmar que lo ha leído y envíelo de regreso con su hijo. Hay algunas otras formas que deberá firmar y regresar también. Cada estudiante puede comprar un almuerzo caliente con leche por el costo de $2.50 por día. La comida se ordena, diariamente por la mañana, a la High School de Evanston. Si su hijo va a llegar un poco tarde y desea ordenar un almuerzo o leche, por favor llame a la oficina (no a la línea de Asistencia donde usted llama para ausencias) de esta manera podemos ordenarle la leche o almuerzo. Ordenamos específicamente la cantidad justa de almuerzos diariamente a las 9:20 AM- así que el saber si su hijo necesita un almuerzo es muy importante para nosotros.
Horario de Lonche Su niño tiene 20 minutos para comer su lonche y 20 minutos para jugar afuera. Su hijo permanece con su clase, durante el período de lonche completo, con 2 supervisoras de almuerzo. Este nuevo programa esta diseñado para que su hijo tenga suficiente tiempo para comer y que el tiempo de receso sea seguro y divertido.
El maestro de su hijo le dirá cuando ir al almuerzo. Algunos estudiantes juegan primero y luego almuerzan, mientras que otros son al contrario.
En los días lluviosos o muy fríos los niños permanecerán dentro durante el tiempo de receso. Sin embargo, los niños jugarán afuera en el tiempo de frio a menos que la temperatura sea menos de 20 grados. Por favor asegúrese de que su hijo venga apropiadamente vestido para el tiempo de invierno: gorra, manoplas o guantes, botas y pantalones de nieve y que cuente con un cambio de ropa en su casillero.

Cómo podemos trabajar juntos para resolver cualquier problema Si usted tiene cualquier preocupación que involucre a su niño en las actividades del salón de clases, por favor comuníquese primero con el maestro. Si no encuentra una solución, siéntase libre de contactar al señor Director Khelghati. Cualquier otro problema como: autobús escolar, almuerzo y pregunta o inquietud que tenga, puede referírselo a Pam Shaffer, nuestra Asistente Administrativa de la escuela. Se encuentra en la oficina diariamente; ella podrá indicarle la fuente apropiada donde pueda dirigirse y ayudarle a decidir cual el mejor camino para encontrar soluciones.
Asuntos de salud Por favor asegúrese de proveer dos números de teléfono para emergencias aparte del suyo. Nosotros trataremos de llamarle primero a su teléfono, en caso de enfermedad o de un accidente. Si ha cambiado de número de teléfono en su casa o de trabajo o cualquiera que nos haya dado para emergencia, tan pronto como sea posible déjenoslo saber. Nuestra Enfermera Escolar es la Sra. Baraona.
Casilleros Cada estudiante tiene un casillero para guardar su chamarra, un par de zapatos extra, etc. Muchos de los niños deben compartir su casillero con otro estudiante. Por favor no envíe a la escuela nada que sea valioso para usted o para su hijo. Los casilleros no tienen llave y la escuela no se hace responsable por los artículos de valor. Si su hijo quiere traer un balón para jugar durante el receso, asegúrese que escriba su nombre con un marcador de tinta permanente.
Asistencia En caso de que su hijo vaya a estar ausente o significativamente tarde, llame al Teléfono de Seguridad/ línea de Asistencia (847-859-8753). La lista de teléfonos importantes se encontrara en el calendario de la Escuela Dewey; este se enviara a casa el primer día de clases en el sobre del PTA.
Si su hijo esta tarde, él/ella debe ir primero a la oficina para recibir un pase de tardanza. Luego su hijo procederá a ir a su salón de clases. Por favor haga todo lo posible para que su hijo sea siempre puntual. Los primeros minutos del día son extremadamente importantes, pues se dan las instrucciones de todo lo que se hará durante el día.
Teléfonos Celulares Está permitido el uso de teléfonos celulares para que los niños puedan ponerse en contacto con sus padres después de las horas de clases. Sin embargo NO ESTA PERMITIDO SU USO, POR NINGUNA RAZON, DURANTE LAS HORAS ESCOLARES Y LOS TELEFONOS DEBEN PERMANECER APAGADOS DESDE LAS 9:05-3:35. Además EL PERSONAL DE LA ESCUELA DEWEY NO SE HARA RESPONSABLE POR LA PERDIDA O ROBO DE LOS TELEFONOS. Los teléfonos que suenen o que sean usados POR CUALQUIER RAZON durante las horas del día escolar, se recogerán por el personal de la escuela.
Visitantes Cuando usted desee visitar la escuela, por favor pase a la oficina para firmar y obtener un pase de visitante. Luego de esto se le permitirá la entrada al área de la escuela. Por favor firme de salida cuando se retire. Esto es muy importante, porque en un evento de emergencia estaremos enterados de quien se encuentra en el edificio.
Aunque usted siempre es bienvenido a la escuela, por favor no visite el salón de su niño sin antes haber seguido el procedimiento escolar. En el caso de que quiera dejar algo para su hijo o necesite decirle un mensaje, por favor pase a la oficina. Nosotros haremos la entrega en un tiempo prudente o llamaremos a su niño a la oficina para que se encuentre con usted. Estamos haciendo un gran esfuerzo para eliminar distracciones en las clases y asegurar el compromiso de lograr el mayor nivel de aprendizaje en todos los estudiantes durante las horas de clases. Cambio de Planes Ocasionalmente, usted puede llamar a la oficina para dejar un mensaje a su hijo por si tiene algún cambio de planes o por emergencia. Esto esta bien y nosotros pasaremos el mensaje con gusto, sin embargo no permitimos que los niños hagan llamadas a su casa, así que usted tiene la responsabilidad de hacer un plan y estar al pendiente de fechas o si los niños van a pasar un día de juego con otros niños durante la tarde. Por favor haga los arreglos con anticipación para que su hijo sepa exactamente dónde, con quién y cómo van a ir después que las clases terminen.
Noche de Currículo y otras Actividades La Noche de Currículo, es solamente para los padres de familia y se llevará a cabo el 7 de septiembre. Esta es una excelente oportunidad para conocer al maestro/a de su niño y aprender acerca del currículo de éste y nuestros estándares. En la siguiente semana se enviará más información de este importante evento.
A través del año escolar, habrá muchas oportunidades para que usted y sus hijos socialicen con otras familias de Dewey. Los avisos se enviarán a casa para anunciar estos eventos y también los puede encontrar en el calendario de la Dewey. Además el PTA publica mensualmente un periódico llamado "Habla el Tigre ", éste contiene información importante acerca de todos los eventos y actividades.
