Dear Dewey Families,
I hope that this letter finds you well and enjoying the summer season. This past year was one full of hard work and great learning. Summer can also be a time to reflect on what has been gained and what next steps are needed. Here at Dewey, a team of teachers and our parents have been working hard at planning and preparing for next year.
Recent News Dewey will continue to host the Bridges Program, now expanded into a K-2 cross-categorical program offering students who have special needs access to a broader range of academic supports. (The cross-categorical program for students in grades 3-5 is offered at Dawes Elementary School.)
As you know, our school continues to grow. That means more classrooms are needed and this year, our fifth grade will have an additional section for the first time. Some changes you will see when you come to school this year include moving our art room to the lower level, where students will have an even larger space to work in. The new 5th Grade class will occupy Room 205, and the 2nd grade class formerly on the second floor is moving closer to the other 2nd grade classrooms on the first floor. The second grade class will be in Room 115.
We are unfortunately saying goodbye to some of our teachers who were offered new opportunities. For example, Ms. Henderson, 3rd grade TWI teacher, is taking a position in the Education Department at the Field Museum. Ms. Cassidy, 1st Grade TWI teacher, and her husband have decided to move to Spain. We will miss them both and wish them the best in their new endeavors. I am working to fill these positions before the start of school and hope to introduce you and your children to their new teachers on their first day – Tuesday, September 4th , if not earlier.
We also welcome Ms. Jill Valentino and Ms. Dana Paliluanas. Both are highly qualified teachers with experience working with students with special needs. Ms. Valentino is taking Ms. White’s position in Room 113; Ms. Paliluanas will be here part time supporting Dewey’s inclusion program.
Beginning of year Dates and Reminders The first day of school is Tuesday, September 4th 2012. We will continue the Dewey practice of posting the class list. On August 28th the list will be posted on in the main entrance of the of the school beginning at 8:00 AM. On September 4th, classroom teachers and staff will be outside of the building with classroom numbers ready to welcome you for a new year. The first day is an important day for our students and as in the past, I ask that you allow students to enter the building with their class and their teachers alone. Parents you will have many opportunities to visit the classroom and see all of the learning your children will be engaged in. Our first day will be one that students will need to be able to Be Here and Ready for as they re-adjust to the routines and practices that make Dewey so successful.
Here at Dewey we have a creed called the Dewey Dos that help our students succeed, feel safe and be respectful. The Dewey Dos are to Be Respectful, Be Safe, Be Caring, and Be Here and Be Ready. The Dewey Do’s help guide all of our work here and I can’t wait to see how students will exemplify these Do’s. This is part of a state wide initiative called Positive Behavior Intervention Supports that helps schools build positive learning climates. Last summer Dewey was one of the few schools in the state to receive the "Exemplar" level of PBIS recognition.
Please add these additional Back to School dates to your calendar. The PTA presidents, Stephanie Clemson, Diane Lequar and Emily Hogan have been working hard on your behalf to prepare the plans for a variety of exciting student and parent programs throughout the year. - Sunday, August 26th 3:00-5:00pm: Kindergarten Meet & Greet for families with incoming kindergarteners (Dewey Playground).~ If you have neighbors with incoming kindergarteners that are new to Dewey, please share this with them.
- Tuesday, September 4th 9:05am: All parents are welcome to come for Coffee and meet other parents after the students enter the building on the first day. (Dewey Playground). Line up bell rings at 9:00
- Wednesday, September 5th 6:00-7:30pm: Family Picnic- please bring dinner and a blanket and join fellow Dewey families for dessert (Dewey playground).
- Wednesday, September 12th: Curriculum Night – Come hear about what your students will be learning this year
- Tuesday, September 18th ~7:00-8:30pm PTA meeting (Dewey library)
New Families and Kindergarten All families that will be new to Dewey in the fall are invited to an orientation meeting that is planned for August 28th from 2:00- 3:00 PM. This is an informational meeting to answer any questions you may have about the year. There are also individual parent/student/teacher conferences for Kindergarten students and their parents. These conferences will occur the week of the 28th so please look for a communication by the 21st. This will be a chance for you as a family to accompany your child into their
classroom and learn about the first day of school and the kindergarten curriculum.
We have a lot of exciting learning and work to be done and I look forward to greeting you and welcoming you to a new school year. Have a safe and enjoyable remaining summer period and see you on September 4th .

Queridas familias de Dewey,
Espero que al recibir esta carta se encuentren bien disfrutando de sus vacaciones de verano. El año pasado fue uno de gran aprendizaje y trabajo duro. El verano también puede ser un tiempo para reflexionar sobre lo que hemos avanzado y cuales pasos serán los siguientes. Aquí en Dewey, profesores y padres de familia han estado trabajando arduamente en equipo, planificando y preparando todo para este próximo año.
Noticias Recientes Dewey seguirá siendo sede del Programa de Puentes, que se ha expandido a un programa K-2 de categorías cruzadas que ofrece a los estudiantes que tienen necesidades especiales el acceso a una variedad más amplia de apoyo académico. (El programa de categorías cruzadas para los estudiantes de los grados 3-5 se ofrece en la Escuela Dawes).
Como ustedes han de saber, nuestra escuela sigue creciendo. Eso significa que se necesitan más salones y este año, nuestro 5º grado tendrá una sección adicional por primera vez. Algunos de los cambios que ustedes notarán cuando lleguen a la escuela este año serán: el traslado de nuestra sala de arte a la planta baja, donde los estudiantes tendrán un espacio aún más grande para trabajar, la nueva clase de 5º grado ocupara el salón 205 y la clase de 2º grado que antes estaba en el segundo piso se ha movido más cerca a los otros salones de 2º grado en el primer piso, en el salón 115.
Desafortunadamente tenemos que decir adiós a algunos de nuestros profesores a quienes se les presentaron nuevas oportunidades. Por ejemplo, la Sra. Henderson, maestra de 3er grado del Programa TWI, está tomando una posición en el Departamento de Educación del Field Museum. La Sra. Cassidy, maestra de 1er grado del programa TWI, y su marido han decidido trasladarse a España. Las extrañaremos a ambas y les deseamos suerte en sus nuevas actividades. Estoy trabajando para remplazar estas posiciones antes del inicio de clases y esperamos presentar a ustedes y a sus niños a sus nuevos maestros en el primer día de clases - martes, 4 de septiembre, si no es que lo hacemos antes.
Demos también la bienvenida a las Srtas. Jill Valentino y Dana Paliluanas. Ambas son maestras altamente calificadas y con experiencia trabajando con estudiantes con necesidades especiales. La Srta. Valentino está tomando la posición de la Srta. White, en el salón 113 y la Srta. Paliluanas va a estar aquí tiempo parcial para apoyar el programa de inclusión de Dewey.
Fechas y Recordatorios para el inicio del año El primer día de clases es el martes 4 de septiembre 2012. Vamos a continuar con la práctica de Dewey de publicar la lista de clase. A las 8:00 de la mañana del 28 de agosto la lista se colocará en la entrada principal de la escuela. En el 4 de septiembre los maestros y el personal estarán afuera del edificio con los números de clase listos para darles la bienvenida a un nuevo año. El primer día de clases es muy importante para nuestros estudiantes y como en el pasado, les pido que permitan a los estudiantes entrar al edificio con su clase y sus maestros, ellos solos. Los padres tendrán muchas
oportunidades para visitar el salón de clases y ver todo su aprendizaje. Permitan que sus hijos se dediquen en el primer día a ajustarse a la regla de la escuela de Estar Aquí y Listo y vuelvan a adaptarse a las rutinas y las prácticas que hacen que nuestra escuela Dewey tenga tanto éxito.
Aquí en Dewey tenemos un credo llamado los Dewey Do’s que ayudan a nuestros estudiantes a tener éxito, que se sientan seguros y ser respetuosos. Los Dewey Do’s son reglas que nos enseñan a Ser Respetuosos, Cuidar nuestra Seguridad, Ser Amable y Estar Aquí y Estar Listos. Los Dewey Do’s nos ayudan a orientar todo nuestro trabajo y estoy muy emocionado que casi no puedo esperar para ver cómo los estudiantes serán un ejemplo al seguir cada uno de éstos. Esto es parte de una iniciativa de todo el Estado de Illinois denominada Apoyo para la Intervención de Conducta Positiva, que ayuda a las escuelas a construir un clima positivo de aprendizaje. El verano pasado nuestra escuela Dewey fue una de las pocas escuelas en el Estado en recibir un Reconocimiento al nivel "Ejemplar" por el PBIS.
Por favor, añadan estas fechas del regreso a clases en sus calendarios. Las presidentes del PTA, Stephanie Clemson, Diane Lequar y Emily Hogan han estado trabajando muy duro preparando planes para una buena variedad de emocionantes programas que los padres y estudiantes podrán disfrutar durante todo el año. Por favor, pónganse en contacto con ellas directamente en caso de no estar en la lista de correos electrónicos, pues de esta manera podrán recibir las noticias de la escuela y averiguar sobre como pueden ser voluntarios en nuestra escuela /eventos familiares. - Domingo, 26 de agosto 3:00-5:00pm: Reunión de Kindergarten Meet & Greet para las nuevas familias con niños de kindergarten (Patio de la escuela Dewey).~ Si ustedes tienen vecinos con niños que vayan a entrar a kindergarten y que sean nuevos a Dewey, por favor compartan con ellos este anuncio.
- Martes, 4 de septiembre 9:05am: Todos los padres de familia están invitados para un café donde podrán conocer y compartir con otros padres después de que sus hijos hayan entrado a la escuela para su primer día de clases (Patio de la escuela Dewey). El timbre para formarse suena a las 9:00am.
- Miércoles, 5 de septiembre 6:00-7:30pm: Picnic Familiar – Por favor traigan su cena, una manta y únanse a las familias de sus compañeros de Dewey para el postre (Patio de la escuela Dewey).
- Miércoles, 12 de septiembre: Noche de Currículo - Los invitamos a escuchar sobre lo que sus estudiantes van a aprender durante este año.
- Martes, 18 de septiembre 7:00-8:30pm: Reunión del PTA (Biblioteca de Dewey )
Nuevas Familias y Kindergarten Todas las familias que sean nuevas en Dewey en este otoño están invitadas a una reunión de orientación que está planeada para el 28 de agosto de 2:00-3:00pm. Esta es una reunión informativa para responder cualquier pregunta que ustedes puedan tener acerca del año escolar. También hay conferencias individuales con padres/estudiantes /maestros, para los estudiantes de kindergarten y sus padres. Estas conferencias ocurrirán en la semana del 28 así
que por favor traten de comunicarse antes de la semana del 21. Esta será una magnífica oportunidad para que ustedes como familia puedan acompañar a su hijo en su salón de clase y puedan aprender sobre el primer día de clases y el currículo de Kindergarten.
Tenemos una gran cantidad de emocionante aprendizaje y trabajo por hacer, espero tener la oportunidad para saludarlos y darles la bienvenida a un nuevo año escolar. Les deseo que tengan el resto del verano seguro y agradable y nos vemos el 4 de septiembre.
